Top Stitchers: Animal Spirit

At last I can share my Top Stitchers Season 3 fashionista outfit!

The women’s fashion prompt is “Animal Spirit”-pick an animal you most identify with, and represent their personality, appearance, and overall presence in a complete, high-fashion ensemble.

Cats are my thing.  I love everything about them.  I would sacrifice myself to be reincarnated to a well taken care of house cat.  Or a white tiger.  Who wouldn’t want to be a white tiger?

It was tremendously difficult for me to pick WHICH cat to create an inspiration outfit around.  Tigers and cheetahs immediately came to mind because they are beautiful and powerful, but i feared that was too predictable.  Thinking, thinking, thinking…my daughters LOVE Dark Horse by Katy Perry.  Watching the music video provided all my inspiration-the Egyptian Cat!

I immediately decided on a long pants romper and to be accessorized with a long strapped clutch.  I ordered my pattern-Simplicity 1355A.  Sewed it up using a slinky 4 way stretch knit as a muslin.  I felt the muslin was a 50% failure. While I like the general look, it needed more help than I could provided at the time.  Something was just off, kwim?  i will come back to this muslin at some point in the near future because I DO like it and I think it is totally fixable. But I just wasn’t feelin’ it for Top Stitchers. Sad Face.

Due to the main piece moving to plan B, I felt like I needed to come up with a bag plan B as well. Dagnabit!

I looked through my PDF and paper patterns trying to find another pattern that would fit with my Egyptian Cat theme.  The DMK women’s Innocent and Sexy Draped Tunic pattern I purchased some time ago and never got around to sewing up seems to fit the bill!  With my medium-heavy black 4 way rayon knit, I felt the pattern and fabric combo met all my criteria-even better than my romper idea.  SCORE! The dress sewed up in about 2 hours.  Seriously.  Didn’t even do a muslin.  Crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.  I made a few very slight alternations, mainly taking in the dolman sleeves just a tad as well as around the waist/hip area. I totally understand this might be a too simple of a pattern for a women’s fashion post.  However, I truly feel the fabric and the pattern design completely matches the identity of the Egyptian Cat: sleek, shiny, sly, slender, stealthy, and simple.

The bag is the SisBoom Shellie clutch.  Once again, simple but so are cats. The exterior fabric is gold polyester.  The interior is a simple cotton.  (It’s actually an Asian looking cotton, not Egyptian.  But hey, I like the fabric!)  Since it’s an understated piece, I can use it for many future outings!

The necklace I made as well.  I was in Hobby Lobby about an hour trying to decide what to do.  I’ve never made any kind of jewelry and was feeling overwhelmed and intimidated.  It turned out pretty well, if I say so myself!  Not sure I have any desire to make more jewelry though.

All Egyptians had some sort of head piece.  I thought long and hard if I should incorporate an intricately designed head piece to say POW against all my other sleek designs.  I decided to go with another simple piece.  I’m a simple girl, just like a cat.  I picked up stretch sequined trim from Hobby Lobby.  Merely 1/2 yard, waved my magic wantd, abracadabra-a headband!

Would you like to know my magic spell?  Here is a super duper quick tutorial on the headband.  Each of my girls got one too!

Ask for 1/2 yard, even for kids 4+.

Create a loop, connecting the ends right side to wrong side, over lapping about 1/2″

Stitch together with a zig zag stitch.

I stitched twice, along both bottom raw edges.  The stretch sequined trim does unravel so stitching both raw edges is imperative.

That’s it!  Couldn’t be any easier!
