Donna is the first pattern available in the new Swoon Vintage Collection!
You can purchase Donna outside of the Collection HERE.

What’s this Vintage Collection you recommend?  It is a new vintage inspired bag pattern every month starting now (March 2015) and ending February 2016 brought to you by non other than the fabulous Swoon Sewing Patterns.  That is 12 bag patterns for $38.95. That’s $3.25 per pattern.  Each month IS a surprise.  No photos of the patterns will be leaked.  BUT I can promise you each month will be spectacular. I know; I’ve seen the drawings. Once you purchase the subscription, every month the new pattern will pop up in your Swoon account.  Join the Swoon Facebook group page to know when each new pattern will be in your account.

Back to Donna.

Definitely large enough to carry all your goodies and look cool doing it.

  • 1 yard interior fabric
  • 2 1/2 yards piping
  • 1/2 yard 58″ wide foam interfacing (Soft & Stable or Pellon FF77)
  • 1 1/2 yards fusible woven interfacing (Pellon SF 101)

  • 6″ all purpose zipper
  • 4 3/4″ rectangle loops or 1″ O rings

Time: 5 hours

Experience Level 2.5 out of 4

We all recently discovered how amazing foam interfacing is.  However, if you have bolts and bolts of Pellon SF 101 and fusible fleece (don’t all we bag makers?), you can absolutely use that combination in replace of the foam.  I did on my Donna.

The exterior can be make with a variety of fabrics: quilting cotton, home decor, canvas, wool, denim. The ideas are endless.  As always, I do not recommend using an unstable stretchy fabric on any part of a bag (stretch denim can be ok).

Interior fabric should 99.9% of the time be quilting weight cotton.

The interior has a zipper pocket on one side.  Add some slip pockets on the other side if you desire.  To do so, simply fold the main panel in half, trace the lower half on your interior fabric.  Cut 2 of these half panels.  Place the half panels right sides together, sewing along only the top.  Flip the pocket open and place the fabrics wrong sides together.  Press and baste to the bottom of the blank interior panel.  Then sew the interior together as the pattern describes.

Fabulous bathroom selfie for size comparison!

Need zippers?  My favorite place to purchase is Zipper Island.  She has beautiful colors, zipper assortment, and excellent shipping.
